ChatGPT answer recommending businesses above a separate sponsored ad card

ChatGPT Ads Thailand: Pay Per Click or Get Recommended Free?

On 23 September 2026 OpenAI switched on ChatGPT Ads in Thailand, alongside Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Taiwan — taking the platform past 60 countries. The part that matters for a business here: a Thai legal entity can sign up and run campaigns itself, today, through Ads Manager, without a global agency.

Since that day the question we’ve been asked most is “should we?” This guide answers it with figures and facts from OpenAI’s own documentation — and says plainly what nobody knows yet.

📅 Information as of 26 September 2026. The platform is days old in Thailand; bids, formats and terms will change, and we’ll update this page when they do.

What ChatGPT Ads is and who actually sees the ads

Where the ads appear and what an ad looks like

Ads appear below ChatGPT’s answer, clearly labelled and visually separate from it. According to OpenAI’s Help Center, one ad unit contains the advertiser name, a favicon, a title, one line of copy, an image and a landing-page link. There is no results page and no keyword bid.

The real difference from Google is context. People don’t type a three-word query; they explain the whole goal — “four nights in Krabi with the kids, budget thirty thousand baht, beachfront with a pool.” An ad shown at that moment reaches someone who is actively deciding — even if ChatGPT itself still has limitations worth knowing about.

Who sees them — and who never will

  • See ads: users on the Free and Go plans, aged 18+ (OpenAI uses account age data and age prediction)
  • Never see ads: every Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscriber

So the people who pay for ChatGPT — usually the heaviest users with the most spending power, including staff whose employer pays — will never see your ad. OpenAI hasn’t published what share of Thai users are on Free/Go, so nobody outside OpenAI can size the Thai audience yet.

How to sign up, what it costs (+ launch credit until 30 Sep)

  • Self-serve at ads.openai.com, provided the legal entity that advertises and is billed is based in Thailand
  • Or through OpenAI’s Ads Solutions team for larger spenders, and agency partners dentsu, Havas Media, Omnicom Media, Publicis Groupe and WPP
  • Auction pricing, with a maximum bid set as CPM (per thousand impressions) or CPC (per valid click)
  • OpenAI recommends click campaigns start at US$3–5 per click ≈ ฿100–170
  • Launch credit: OpenAI’s email to Thai businesses says accounts created before 30 September receive ad credit when they spend on their first campaign — amount and minimum not stated; check the terms in Ads Manager before counting on it

You have until Wednesday 30 September — creating an account is free and no spend is required; it just secures the credit.

How ChatGPT Ads works — and where it differs from Google Ads

If you’ve used Google or Meta Ads the skeleton will feel familiar, but a few things are thought about differently. Knowing them up front saves paying for the lesson yourself.

The three-level campaign structure

  1. Campaign — objective, budget, dates and targeting
  2. Ad group — a set of ads around one theme; this is where context hints live
  3. Ad — the creative: title, copy, image, landing page

Everything is reviewed before it serves. An ad marked “Not serving” shows the reason inside Ads Manager.

No keywords — "context hints" instead

This is the biggest departure from Google. You don’t buy the phrase “hotel Krabi”. You write context hints — short descriptions of what the offer is, which needs it suits and in which situations, e.g. “Beachfront pool villa in Ao Nang for families with young children, walking distance to the beach.”

OpenAI’s system then picks ads based on the context and intent of the current conversation + the ad’s landing page, title and copy + your hints + (if the user has personalisation on) select signals from their wider ChatGPT use. OpenAI is explicit that hints are not exact-match keywords, don’t guarantee an ad appears in any given conversation, and can’t be used as location or scheduling rules.

The consequence: your landing page quality directly affects matching, because the system reads your page as a signal, not just your ad.

How you pay: Views, Clicks, Conversions

ObjectiveYou pay forBest for
ViewsImpressions (CPM)Awareness, new brands
Clicks Start hereValid clicks (CPC)Driving traffic — OpenAI’s recommended starting point
ConversionsStill per click (oCPC), optimised toward a conversion eventOnce the Pixel has enough data

The auction is second-price, weighted by relevance — like Google, you rarely pay your full maximum, and a more relevant ad can win with a lower bid. Ads Manager flags bids that look too low to deliver.

What the reports show

Currently: impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. Impressions, clicks and CTR refresh roughly every 15 minutes, but spend can lag by seven to eight hours — a zero in the morning doesn’t mean you haven’t been charged. Set daily budgets with that in mind.

ChatGPT Ads cost per click vs. Google Ads in Thailand

Most local-intent searches on Google Ads in Thailand cost tens of baht per click; competitive categories like hotels, clinics or insurance can reach the low hundreds. ChatGPT’s suggested starting range of ฿100–170 is therefore roughly three to ten times Google for a comparable query.

Comparing clicks alone isn’t fair. Someone who clicks from ChatGPT has already talked through what they want, so conversion rates may be higher. The problem is that nobody in Thailand has real data on how much higher — the platform has been live for less than a week.

The safest approach is a generous assumption, then a gut check: ฿150 a click × 2% conversion (healthy for a brand-new channel) = ฿7,500 per customer. That number is the dividing line for everything that follows.

Which businesses should test ChatGPT Ads (with the maths)

Worth testing: hotels, villas, clinics, B2B

BusinessValue of one customer฿7,500 cost as shareVerdict
Resort (3 nights × ฿5,000)฿15,000+50% — tight, survivable with repeat guestsTestable
Pool villa, Samui / Phuket฿40,000+Under 20%Worth it
Aesthetic / dental clinic (packages)฿20,000–100,0008–37%Worth it
Factory / B2B (six-figure deals)฿300,000+Under 3%Worth it if hints target well
Web design / consulting฿25,000+~30%Testable

Assumptions: ฿150 per click · 2% conversion — no Thai benchmarks yet

Not yet: restaurants, day tours, low-ticket retail

BusinessValue of one customerVerdict
Restaurant (฿800 average bill)฿800Underwater by the 6th click
Day tour (฿1,500 per person)฿1,500–4,500Not yet unless selling groups
Low-ticket online retailHundreds of bahtNot yet

Rule: profit per customer under ฿5,000 = no rush

Easy rule: if profit (not revenue) per customer is under ฿5,000, there’s no rush.

Why waiting two to three months costs you nothing

  • No Thai benchmarks exist; every figure above is a labelled assumption
  • OpenAI itself says new formats, optimisation tools and measurement are coming “over the next few months” — this is version one
  • Ads Manager bills in US dollars and hasn’t confirmed Thai-baht billing
  • Early advertisers pay the market’s tuition; unless budget is loose, let others pay it and enter with data

The exception: creating an account before 30 Sep for the credit costs nothing. Do that.

Your website has to be ready first — or the clicks are wasted

This is the part people skip and regret, because OpenAI’s own documentation makes clear that half the work of ChatGPT Ads happens on your website, not in Ads Manager.

1. Let OpenAI's bots reach your pages

Every landing page submitted with an ad is visited by OAI-AdsBot to check it against ad policy, and OpenAI says it may also use the page content to decide when the ad is relevant. If the bot can’t get in, the ad doesn’t serve.

Things that block it without you noticing: robots.txt rules, firewalls, CDN bot protection, CAPTCHAs, login walls. OpenAI notes Cloudflare already verifies and allows OAI-AdsBot, but other providers may need an explicit rule — and it recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot too (the one that gets you into unpaid answers). See keeping a site secure without blocking the bots you want.

2. Install the OpenAI Pixel — with PDPA consent

Conversions are measured via the OpenAI Pixel on-site and/or the Conversions API server-side. When someone clicks an ad, OpenAI appends a parameter called oppref to your landing URL; the Pixel stores it in a first-party cookie so a later purchase or lead can be matched to the click.

Get this right: don’t let redirects strip oppref · if you use both Pixel and API, send the same event ID so duplicates are removed · and collect PDPA consent before firing — your cookie banner has to actually gate this Pixel, not just sit next to it.

Skip this and you’ll know what you spent but never how many customers came back.

3. One landing page per offer, not the homepage

OpenAI recommends several distinct, benefit-led ad variations per offer, each sending people to a page that matches that product rather than a generic homepage — because the landing page is a matching signal, and a homepage that says everything is a blurred signal.

For Thai businesses selling to both Thai and foreign customers, that means separate hints, ads and landing pages per language, not one translated set. See what a page that actually converts needs.

4. Fast on mobile

Most Free/Go users are on their phones. A ฿150 click landing on a page that takes six seconds to load is money thrown away.

In one line: a site ready for ChatGPT Ads = bots can get in + a consent-gated Pixel + one page per offer + fast. Not sure yours passes all four? Have us check your site free — send the link, answer within one day.

The free alternative: be in the answer, not below it

Ads sit below the answer. The answer itself — where ChatGPT says “recommended places to stay in Krabi are…” — cannot be bought. OpenAI’s ads principles confirm ads don’t influence it. A business inside the answer holds a better position than any ad, is seen by Plus and Pro users who never see ads, and pays nothing per click.

What AI uses to recommend a business

ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overview pick businesses from websites they can read, understand and trust — bot-accessible (the same OAI-SearchBot as above), correctly structured, answering questions directly, showing evidence of being a real local operator, and referenced by other sites. A Facebook page can do none of this.

Notice that the four points in the previous section are the same foundation. A site ready for ChatGPT Ads and a site AI recommends for free are the same site. The industry calls this GEO, Generative Engine Optimisation — how GEO works in practice.

Proof: four provinces where we're in Google's AI answer

We tested this on our own site before recommending it. Today, search “web design krabi”, “web design phang nga” or “web design phuket” and Google’s AI Overview lists Deemmi first or near the top, alongside page-one organic rankings. The Phuket page got there seven days after publishing — with no ad spend.

See the pages yourself: Krabi · Khao Lak & Phang Nga · Phuket · Koh Samui & Surat Thani

No trick — a website structured so AI can read it from day one. It works for hotels, clinics and factories exactly as it worked for us.

What OpenAI hasn't said yet

In fairness to the reader, these are not in OpenAI’s public documentation as of writing:

  • What share of Thai ChatGPT users are on Free/Go (= the real audience size)
  • Whether billing in Thai baht is supported (all documentation is in USD)
  • Thailand-specific targeting options (province, language)
  • The size of the launch credit and any minimum spend
  • Thai CTR/CVR benchmarks

We’ll update this page as they appear.

What to do now

  1. Every business: get your website into AI answers first — free, permanent, seen by every plan, and a better position than any ad. It starts with a website structured so AI can read it from day one
  2. Every business (before 30 Sep): create an ads.openai.com account for the credit — no spend required
  3. Profit per customer above ฿5,000: run one Clicks test on one high-intent offer, ฿5,000–10,000 budget, Pixel working before day one, and judge it against the cost per lead you already accept elsewhere
  4. Profit per customer below that: wait two to three months for Thai benchmarks and put the budget into point 1
  5. Everyone: if your site doesn’t pass the four-point checklist, don’t spend yet — send the link on WhatsApp or LINE, free check within one day

FAQ

Yes. Thailand is open for self-service through Ads Manager at ads.openai.com, provided the legal entity that advertises and is billed is based in Thailand. Businesses can also go through OpenAI’s Ads Solutions team or an agency partner.

No. OpenAI’s ads principles state that ads are labelled, kept separate from the answer, have no influence on what ChatGPT says, and that advertisers never see users’ conversations.

In practice you need a website: OAI-AdsBot has to crawl the landing page, the OpenAI Pixel has to be installed to measure results, and the system uses the page content to match ads to conversations — none of which a Facebook page allows.

Yes — and it’s a better position, inside the answer and visible to every plan. The condition is a website that allows OAI-SearchBot and has structure and content AI can read, understand and trust.

Google Ads first: cheaper clicks, full Thai benchmarks, location and schedule targeting, and more precise measurement. ChatGPT Ads suits high-value businesses as a supplementary channel worth testing before competitors do.
